MEU – It is not merely a project, but an idea that took shape and grew into genuine change.

The story of Model European Union Iași began with the vision of a student: Andreea Șerban, a law student at the Faculty of Law from Iași, who frequently took part in various activities and projects, among which was MEU at the international level. She quickly grew fond of the project, and before long, the international initiatives took root in Iași as well. Here lies the origin of the very first Model European Union in Romania.

In 2017, Andreea Șerban, together with Ioan Dumitru Apachiței, Georgiana Curea and Bogdan-Alexandru Petrescu, brought this project to life. Each year, MEU expanded in scope thanks to its activities, debates and the strong bond formed among participants. Even in 2020, during the pandemic, the project did not stop, instead creating valuable memories and experiences for all involved. This year, Model European Union Iași continues with its ninth edition.

WHAT IS MEU? The initiative represents an academic simulation of the legislative process within the European Union, organized in Iași and dedicated to young people passionate about European affairs. Participants become familiar with the mechanisms of EU institutions, particularly those of the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union, as they debate two genuine and controversial legislative proposals issued by the European Commission.

The year 2026 marks the ninth edition, aiming to bring together young people from across Europe and beyond, within a framework modeled on the institutional structure of the European Union in the field of law-making. Its purpose is to offer participants the experience of acting as ministers in the Council of the EU or members of the European Parliament, allowing them to practically develop the specific skills required in these roles, while promoting the practice of European values and the use of structured dialogue as a means of debating and resolving society challenges and legislative initiatives.

The project is conducted in English and provides a favorable environment for learning, academic and professional development, and for building connections among participants eager to deepen their passion for the fundamental values of the European Union.

Over the years, Model European Union has enjoyed the patronage of the European Commission Representation in Romania, as well as European-level patronage, and this year it seeks to gain the support of the European Parliament Representation in Romania. One of the project’s most important partners is Europe Direct, under whose guidance the initiative continues to grow year after year.

Model European Union Iași is not merely a project, but a story of profound significance, one that has taken root and continues to flourish thanks to young people passionate about what the European Union represents today. The founders of MEU initiated the journey, but we carry the mission forward, committed to promoting European values and to building, year after year, a more united community.
